Pygmy Hippo: the best comes in a package of pygmy, that’s what it says, right? The pygmy hippos, as the name implies, are smaller than the relatives of their hippos. When mature, the pygmy hippo weighs only a few hundred pounds and is only one meter tall. The family of pygmy hippos is composed of mother, father, pogo and child, holly berries. They may be “small”, but their personalities are very large. Proud Pope Pogo is a gentle and kind hippo who likes to stretch the steps of the pool to keep half of his body in the water and the other half in the sun. If you have children, Pogo can go directly to the window of its residence to view them, making it possible to take excellent photos and a great memory!
Aldabras Giant Tortoise: from the Aldabra atoll island north of Madagascar, Native Aldabras is the last species of giant tortoise in the eastern hemisphere. They are not only tall, but the Aldabra turtle also has an extraordinary personality. Zoo Tampa is habitat to three adult Aldabra turtles: a man named Al & 2 female named Dabby & Sligh. Every day, the zoo calls guests to interact with the turtles and create shells at a special encounter with the Aldabra turtle.
Great One Horned Rhinoceros: there are five types of rhinos throughout the world, each of which plays a unique role in its environment and throughout the ecosystem. Here at Zoo Tampa there are these two wonderful species: the southern white rhinoceros and the unicorn rhinoceros. This gentle giant, commonly known as the Indian rhinoceros, is a rare and endangered species. Unlike white southern rhinos, Indian rhinos are one of only two that have a single horn and their skin looks like armor that makes them truly unique. Do you want to know how to step on the muzzle with Jamie or Johnny? With daily training and positive reinforcement from the Animal Care team, the rhino hopes to meet you. This meeting also serves as training for voluntary veterinary exams and procedures. Not only do you have the opportunity to experience Indian rhinos up close, but you can also be part of the daily attention!
