Disney Hollywood Studios for Thrill Seekers

Disney World Hollywood Studios for Thrill Seekers

Disney World is full of activities that are designed to appeal to active young adults. At the Disney-Hollywood Studios, thrills are available in a variety of different venues. From stunt shows to a dark roller coaster, adventure seekers will not be disappointed.

Hollywood Boulevard

This main road from the entrance gates to the Chinese Theater serves as a transition from the real world to the Golden Age of Hollywood. Take a moment out to enjoy the Streetmosphere characters. Portraying stereotypical Hollywood “types” from the Character Actor to the Starlet, they are masters at drawing in the audience. Step up and join in for some laughs.

*Tip* Film buffs will want to take some time out to explore the handprints in front of the theater.

The Great Movie Ride is housed inside the Chinese Theater. Though not a “thrill ride,” this ride takes you inside the action in some of your favorite movie moments.

*Tip* The front set of cars and the back set of cars provide two different ride experiences. Try to see both.

Sunset Boulevard

This area is home to Disney-Hollywood Studios’ most traditional thrill rides, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster and the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster is a high speed indoor dark coaster with multiple inversions. Aerosmith is featured prominently in the attraction. This is definitely a must-see for thrill enthusiasts.

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is an extreme attraction on many levels. The storyline is explained in the library pre-show, and the setting is an old service elevator. This attraction is one of the prime examples of the multilayered storytelling for which Disney is famous. Plan to ride more than once, as every experience is slightly different.

Streets of America

This area is home to the new Lights, Motors, Action! extreme stunt show. The show provides park guests with a backstage view of a variety of car, motorcycle, and watercraft stunts. This is a must-see for adrenaline junkies.

The Honey I Shrunk the Kids playground shrinks guests to the size of bugs for a giant play land. Though not a traditional “thrill” activity, the playground is large enough to handle adult-sized guests, and is actually a lot of fun.

MuppetVision 4D is a lot of fun, if you ever enjoyed the Muppets. The show is exciting and the 4D effects are terrific. See this one if you have the time.

Mickey Avenue

This area is home to the Backlot Tour . If you have an interest in the behind the scenes world of moviemaking, this tour is worth your time. You will see a variety of props and costumes from well-known films, and will find yourself inside an exciting scene.

*Tip* Sit on the left side of your tram car.

*Tip* Allow yourself some time to enjoy the exhibit at the end of the Backlot Tour. “Villains, the Characters You Love to Hate” is a well-done tribute to the most beloved villains of all time.

Journey Into Narnia and One Man’s Dream are both excellent walk through attractions. If you have the time, be sure to visit these as well.

Animation Courtyard

Dedicated to the legendary films of Disney Animation, this area may at first glance seem unimportant to the thrill seeking adult. However, thrill seeking adults were, at one time, thrill seeking children. This area is dedicated to those adventures of childhood. The Magic of Disney Animation tour is quite well-done and should not be missed.

Voyage of the Little Mermaid is a spectacular show blending film, puppetry, and live actors. Be sure to see this one for the effects, regardless of your love (or lack thereof) for its namesake film.

Echo Lake

This area has two main attractions of interest to the adventure seeker. The Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular focuses on physical stunts. The storyline is stunt photography for an Indiana Jones film, and the show provides an up close look at everything from fist fights to explosions. This show is a definite must-see.

*Tip* Ever want to be part of the action? Arrive early for casting, and you might get to be an extra in the show (ages 18 and up only).

Star Tours is a motion simulator that takes you inside the beloved Star Wars films. The ride is exciting and quite well done.

*Tip* Ask for the back row, then lift your feet off the floor and your arms away from the armrests. This makes for a much better ride.

*Tip* Take time to shop at the Tattooine Traders, located at the ride exit. A variety of Star Wars merchandise, including some limited editions, can be found here.

At first glance, Hollywood Studios may seem to lack the total thrills and chills of other theme parks. However, it must be kept in mind that Disney was a storyteller. The attractions are utterly immersive in a way that few other parks can match. As Disney’s “movie park,” Disney-Hollywood Studios provides you with an up close and personal look at scenes from a variety of genres. The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is perhaps the best example of the psychological thrills provided by the park, but examples abound throughout. Allow yourself to suspend disbelief, and you may find that Disney-Hollywood Studios approaches the top of your list favorite destinations on your Disney World vacation.
