Teens & Fun at Disney World?

Walt Disney World is great for the younger set, but as your kids get older, you might be asking yourself, “Can my teenagers really have fun at Disney World?” They've probably outgrown the excitement of meeting the characters or having breakfast with Cinderella in the castle and rides like Dumbo and It's a Small World make them roll their eyes.

Roller coasters

Disney has roller coasters at three out of its four theme parks. The Magic Kingdom has Space Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain. These two “mountains” might not be the tallest roller coasters in Central Florida, but they each back a wallop with quick turns that will toss your teens around in their seats.

Splash Mountain isn't a roller coaster, and it has its “cute” dark ride element, but teenagers still enjoy the big drop at the end, and the whole family will enjoy the opportunity to get wet, or maybe even soaked, on a hot summer day in Florida.

Disney's Hollywood Studios features Rock 'N' Roller Coaster. Granted, you might relate more to the Aerosmith soundtrack than your teenagers do, but they'll love the fact that it's loud music and they'll enjoy zipping and flipping down the track in the darkness.

Disney's Animal Kingdom has Expedition Everest, a tall coaster with a Yeti theme that goes inside the mountain and sends riders on a disorienting backwards ride into the darkness.

Disney's Animal Kingdom has a special tour, Wild Africa Trek, that gives teens a special way to see the animals. From swaying bridges to cross the crocodile pool to watching hippos feeding up close. They also get to join a private safari that goes through areas not seen by guests on the standard Kilimanjaro ride.

This is an extra-cost tour, but if your teens enjoy animals, it's a guaranteed way to let them have fun. These tours are offered several times each day. You can sign up your teenagers and let them enjoy independent fun while you enjoy the kiddie attractions at Disney's Animal Kingdom with their younger siblings.

Boat rentals

Teens like thrills, and they also like a feeling of independence. Combine that by letting them rent two-passenger Sea Racers at one of the Disney hotel docks or Downtown Disney. Kayak and canoe rentals are also available, but most teenagers prefer the power of a motorboat. They may roll their eyes on rides like the Jungle Cruise that follow a track, but they'll love being in full control out on Bay Lake or the Seven Seas Lagoon or one of the other Disney waterways.

Archery

Did you know that Walt Disney World offers archery at its Fort Wilderness Campground, which is easily accessible via car, on a boat from the Magic Kingdom, or via bus from any of the other Disney theme parks? The 90-minute class lets teens try their hands at a new skill. First, they learn how to use a compound bow. Then it's off to the target range to see how many bulls-eyes they can hit. The limited class size means plenty of coaching from the instructors. There are other opportunities for teen fun at Disney, but these are a few examples. If your teenagers complain that they won't have fun at Walt Disney World, let them know there are plenty of thrill rides and special activities to make the trip just as much fun for them as it is for the younger kids in the family.
