vacation to Orlando for next year, and she struggling with the idea of making the reservation so early.

Orlando hotels work the exact same way, all hotels are always trying to maximize their profits. The best practice is to check the properties cancellation policy, if the policy is fair then go ahead and make the reservations.

Theme park ticket prices always go up in January. Disney Theme Park employees are all union employees as well, so they are guaranteed a raise every year. Disney simply passes the wage increase over to the theme park goers. The ticket prices typically go up 3.5% to 4% each year. The best practice is to make your reservations as early as possible, this way you will be able to lock yourself into the previous years prices, hence saving you the price increase.
These are just two reasons you should go ahead and make your reservations early.
